Walk into any school. Before you’ve read a single notice board or met a single teacher, you already know something about what they believe.
The light tells you. The smell tells you.The sound — or the absence of it — tells you.
The materials within reach of a child’s hand tell you everything. We spend enormous energy deciding what to teach children.
We spend almost none asking what the space around them is quietly teaching, every single hour, without a lesson plan.
There’s a distinction worth making: a building contains. A space belongs. One is designed for efficiency. The other is designed for a child.
What we believe about children shows up directly in what we build for them. Schools that believe children need to be managed build corridors.
Schools that believe children need to be filled build rows. Schools that believe children are curious, capable, meaning-making people — build something else. Every classroom is an argument. Most of us just never read it.
Consider light. A child under fluorescent light all day isn’t simply uncomfortable — they’re in a space that has already made a decision about them.
Natural light isn’t an aesthetic preference. It orients a child in time, regulates their nervous system, and tells their body something a thousand morning circles cannot: you are somewhere real.
Consider sound. A child in a loud, echoing room isn’t distracted. They’re exhausted. There’s a difference — and it matters enormously for how we read children’s behaviour. Consider materials.
Wood, clay, stone — these carry knowledge in a way that plastic simply cannot. A child’s hand is an instrument of intelligence. What we put within reach of it is a pedagogical choice, whether we make it consciously or not.
At Eravoo, we think about our space the way we think about our curriculum — with intention, and with the child’s whole body in mind, not just their mind. We don’t always get it right. But we ask the question.
